Christmas Results Roundup

With all the food and drink consumed over the Christmas holidays, a number of Striders have been out and about burning the calories off!

On Christmas Day morning, 13 Striders headed to a parkrun for a festive 5km run. At York, Guy Close set a new PB, finishing in 19:21. At Harrogate, James Wright led home the Striders contingent, completing the 3 lap course in 20:34. New member Jonathon Newbould followed, completing his first parkun in a time of 22:06. Next Strider across the finish line, making a comeback from injury, was Andy Robinson (22:46) and he was joined by Sean Brennan (23:35), Julian Carr (23:39), Derek Calvert (23:43), John Greveson (25:34), Andrea Price (29:35), Natalie Hale (29:40), Sue Randell (30:37), Dawn Richardson (31:02) and Nikky Christie (32:47).

Whilst Christmas Day morning was cold but dry, Boxing Day saw a number of parkrun events called off due to the torrential rain, but the York and Harrogate events continued, with Striders representation at each. On the Knavesmire at York, James Wright recorded a time of 19:49 on a VERY wet course. The Harrogate event also experienced extreme conditions, with a number of mini ‘lakes’ forming on the Stray course. Despite the challenging conditions, 4 Striders clocked a time, with Nicola Carter first Strider back in a time of 23:12. Nick Wallen was next, stopping the clock on 27:22. He was followed by Anthony Everitt and Tracy Allison, who finished in times of 29:45 and 33:26 respectively.

The torrential conditions on Sunday meant the popular ‘Jolly Holly Jog 10k’ was cancelled (a new date is yet to be published). Up in the North East, Dan Wilson took on the tough ‘Guisborough Woods Fell Race’. The 5.3 mile course includes 1,312ft of climbing on a mainly trail type course. Dan finished in a time of 51:21.

Just prior to Xmas, Sue Morley ran ‘The Stoop Fell Race’ in Howarth, finishing the 5 mile course, which takes in 800ft of climbing, in a time of 57:04.

Please let us know if we have missed any results.

Peco XC 15/16 – Race 2 – 13/12/15 – West Park Fields – Results

15 Striders headed over to West Park Fields in Leeds for the 2nd Peco Cross Country race of the 15/16 season on Sunday 13th December. The wet conditions in the week prior to the event ensured the course resembled a mud bath throughout, with the cold conditions adding an extra issue to contend with.

Starting with the Ladies results, Sima Lowery and Nicola Carter were once again fighting it out for 1st Strider home. Sima was first on this occasion, finishing in 39:04, with Nicola completing the 4.7 mile course in 39:11. Sue Morley was next, just missing out on a top 100 placing, finishing 103rd in 45:12. Sue was followed by Edna Wood (55:05) and Janet Morris (01:00:56). The results consolidated the Ladies lead at the top of the Vets 2nd Division and a placing of 4th in the main 2nd Division.

Keith Emery once again led home Striders in the men’s field, finishing in 59th place with a time of 32:44. Martin Brock, competing in his 1st Cross Country event of the season, agonisingly missed out on a top 100 placing by 1 position, stopping the clock on 34:15. James Wright was just under two minutes behind, finishing in 36:10, before a tight pack of 3 Striders followed. Dan Wilson, Philip Cornforth and Sean Brennan were separated by only 12 seconds overall, finishing in times of 37:15, 37:17 and 37:27 respectively. Joining them were Ian Mitchell (42:50), Julian Carr (43:23) and Eric Morley (48:22). Steve Morris also attended but unfortunately had to pull out of the race early on due to injury. The results allowed the Striders to stay above local rivals Harrogate Harriers in the 2nd Division, consolidating 3rd spot, and achieve a placing of 7th in the Vets 1st Division.

Well done to all who took part – if you have registered for the Peco series, why not give the next event a go? It will be held on 3rd January at Middleton Park, Leeds. Further information can be found on www.pecoxc.co.uk

Weekend Roundup – Is it really Winter?

Unseasonably warm weather provided dry conditions for Saturday morning parkruns and the Santa Stride on Sunday.

6 Striders battled against strong winds to complete Harrogate parkrun on Saturday morning. James Wright was back first, finishing in 20:51. Sean Brennan (22:49) just held off Nicola Carter, who by finishing in a time of 23:08, took the 1st Female placing at the event for the first time in her 29 appearances (and the only Strider to take 1st Male or Female ever at a parkrun event!). Gareth Conkleton (24:57) was next back and he was followed by Julian Carr (26:16) and Anthony Everitt (28:49).

Over at Fountains Abbey, Dawn Richardson and Phil Chatterton made their way throught the water gardens and around the Abbey ruins to complete the 93rd running of the event. Dawn stopped the clock on 29:06, with Phil finishing in 35:30.

There were some quizzical looks from visitors to Knaresborough on Sunday as they were greeted by approximately 40 Santa’s running around the town. It was a great event for all involved and it was fantastic to see some Striders of the future taking part to help with the fundraising for Cancer Research UK.
