Milder but still plenty of mud!

What a difference a week makes! Last week we reported on freezing cold temperatures greeting Striders at the Brass Monkey Half Marathon but this week the conditions were much milder for those Striders competing at events over the weekend.

Starting with parkrun on Saturday, the club was represented at three events. At Harrogate, Martin Brock took in some pre Cross Country practice to finish in 19:47. Also negotiating the course, including the corner 3 ‘quagmire’, were Gareth Conkleton (23:44), Nick Wallen (25:11) and Rob Charlesworth (29:50). Over at Fountains Abbey, Guy Close clocked a time of 33:06. In South West London, Derek Calvert took on the 3 laps of the Dulwich parkrun. He clocked a time of 22:12 on his first visit to the event.

On Sunday morning, Striders were split over two events – the Jolly Holly Jog and the Peco Cross Country. Starting with the 10k Jolly Holly Jog, which had been rearranged from its original date of 27th December, 8 Striders competed in an overall field of 525. Guy Close was the first Blue and Gold vest home, finishing in a time of 44:09. Andy Robinson, returning from injury, clocked a time of 47:32 to finish just ahead of Stewart Hymas (48:04). They were followed by Ian Mitchell (54:51), Tom Burrell (01:07:47), Natalie Hale (01:07:53), Jane Day (01:08:57), Katie Gray (01:13:25) and June Graham (01:15:08).

The 4th race of the 2015/2016 Peco Cross Country Series was held at Golden Acre Park (Leeds). Participants had to take on two laps of a tough course that included 400m of what can only be described as a ‘shoe taking bog’! All of the Striders managed to keep their shoes on however to record some excellent results. Starting with the Ladies, Nicola Carter finished first in her age category with a time of 34:42, just holding off Sima Lowery (34:48). Sue Morley was next down the fast, downhill finish straight, clocking a time of 40:48 to take 1st in her age category also. Pamela Singleton, making her first appearance of the XC season, was the next Strider back in a time of 42:51. Andrea Price, Edna Wood and Dawn Richardson all had strong races to finish in 46:03, 47:44 and 48:01 respectively to complete the ladies line up. A number of trophies are looking likely for members of the ladies team – watch out for further news after the next race on 14/02/16. In the Men’s event, Martin Brock led home the Striders group with a time of 30:15. Dan Wilson and James Wright were neck and neck throughout the first lap but Dan pushed on in the second lap to finish in 32:40, with James following just under a minute later (33:32). Sean Brennan was next, completing the two energy sapping laps in 34:58 and he was followed by Andy Roberts, who competing in his first XC event of the season, clocked a time of 40:29.
