A busy start to the New Year

It has been a busy start to 2016 for Striders, with 8 different events visited between the 1st and 3rd January.

1st January – Double header parkrun
On New Years Day, Striders were represented at 3 events. Sean Brennan took advantage of the staggered start times at Woodhouse Moor and Temple Newsam parkruns to record a double result. He completed he Woodhouse Moor event first in a time of 23:34. He then headed over to Temple Newsam, finishing the hilly course in 25:11. Down in Dorset, James Wright took on his first race of the year, finishing the Broadstone 1/4 Marathon in 43:45.

2nd January – parkruns a plenty
On Saturday, 12 Striders completed a parkrun event. Starting with the local Harrogate event, Graham Yare (21:43) was 1st Strider to complete the 3 lap course, finishing just ahead of Andy Robinson (21:57). Gareth Conkleton stopped the clock dead on 24:00 and he was followed by Anthony Everitt (29:17) and Tracy Allson (31:11). Sean Brennan and Nicola Carter were also in attendance in a volunteering capacity.

At Fountains Abbey, Guy Close (20:11) led home a Striders contingent of 5. Phil Chatterton followed Guy, completing his run in 24:03. John Greveson was next up, finishing in 25:13. Taking on a pre Peco XC run was Dawn Richardson (28:58) and she was joined by a buggy pushing (including child!) Liam Kennedy, who completed the course in 32:11.

A little further away, in London, Derek Calvert visited the Crystal Palace event for the 3rd time and finished with a time of 24:15. The Blandford (Dorset) parkrun was visited by James Wright (also for the 3rd time), who secured a course PB in 19:20.

3rd January – Mud….lots of mud!!
The 3rd race of the PECO Cross Country league took place at Middleton Park (Leeds) on Sunday. The 4.9 mile course was taken on by 17 Striders – all of whom had a little bit of mud on them by the end!

In the men’s race, Martin Brock led home the Striders group of 10, finishing in 34:17. Keith Emery followed, completing the 2 lap course in 34:50. Dan Wilson (37:41) just held off Phil Cornforth (37:59), with Andy Robinson just under a minute behind (38:53). James Cornforth, back from university in Manchester for the holiday period, finished his first Peco race in 39:30, just pipping regular cross country runner Sean Brennan (39:55). Julian Carr was next across the finish line, stopping the clock on 43:43. Eric Morley and Steve Morris completed the male Striders line up, finishing in 50:43 and 01:00:31 respectively. The results gave the team a 3rd place finish in the 2nd Division and 9th in the Vets 1st Division.

Striders ladies were represented by 7 members. Sima Lowery completed the course in 40:57 to be first Strider home. Nicola Carter finished just 13 seconds behind in 41:10 to take 2nd place in her age category. Sue Morley also secured 2nd place in age category with a finishing time of 47:48. An ever improving Edna Wood (55:25) held off Dawn Richardson (55:49) and they were joined by Tracy Allison (56:27) and Andrea Price (57:58) to help the team take 3rd place in the main 2nd Division and 1st in the Vets 1st Division for the race.

After 3 races, both the men’s and ladies teams are performing well in the respective leagues. The men are 3rd in the main 2nd Division and 8th in the Vets 1st Division. The ladies are 4th in the main 2nd Division and sit at the top of the Vets 1st Division.
