Club News – Results, Dates for the Diary and the London Marathon Draw

There’s a decent amount to round-up this week – not all results though! We have news of a marathon challenge, parkrun results, some dates for the diary, London Marathon place draw and a review of the social event of the year (the Striders Christmas party!). So pour yourself an eggnog, grab a mince pie and take a peek…..we start with news of results on the first Saturday of the month.

December rings in with parkrun tourism
On December 3rd, the club “first Saturday of the month” parkrun visit was to Cross Flatts in Leeds. The course threw in a couple of hills (definitely not “undulations”) and two flights of steps – so a little bit different to most of the parkruns in the area! James Wright took 3rd place overall with a time of 19:21 and Nicola Carter finished 1st lady in a time of 21:14.

Dan Foley took on some more adventurous parkrun tourism, heading over the border to Wales to take on the Bryn Bach course. Set on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the course consists of “Two laps of a fast, scenic, traffic-free course. The course uses a tarmac path that loops the lake in a clockwise direction”. Dan finished his two laps in 20:06.

Julian Carr was the sole visitor to the York event, finishing in 21:37.

At Harrogate Ian Mitchell led the way for Striders, completing his 3 laps in 20:14. Jason Green was just under a minute behind (21:12) and was chased down by Sean Brennan (21:33). The rest of the Striders contignent was headed by Julie Elmes (26:25) and she was joined by club coach Eric Morley (26:33), Mark Shelton (27:27) and Rob Charlesworth (28:24).

Over at Fountains Abbey, Guy Close got almightily close to his goal of a sub 18minute parkrun by clocking 18:03. It will come Guy – keep going!

A Marathon Challenge
Sunday 4th December was a big day for Striders vice-chair Dan Wilson. He completed his triple endurance challenge (after already completing a triathlon and taking part in the Equinox 24 hour race) by completing 13, 2mile laps of the Stray to complete a full marathon. Dan was joined by approximately 30 people at the start line, with a mix of distances completed. Well done to Dan for organising this event and completing his “triple crown” (and raising over £1000 in the process for charity).

Is it really December?
Mild conditions greeted parkrunners on Saturday morning – certainly not what we are used to at this time of year!
Harrogate was attended by five Striders, with Nicola Carter leading the way with a time of 21:11. Sean Brennan quickly followed (21:25) and was joined by Mark Taylor (25:02), Tony Everitt (27:22) and Xmas Party Supremo Edna Wood (29:30).

David Halladay was the first Strider across the line at Fountains Abbey, completing the course in 25:39. Gaynor Downs made her first visit to this parkrun and clocked 38:13, followed shortly afterwards by Danielle Greenwood in 38:34.

Guy Close visited Wetherby for 3 tough laps of the playing fields. He took the 2nd position token by finishing in 18:48.

Down South, Julie Elmes took on the Brackley event and finished with a time of 27:13.

Through the woods at the Leeds Xmas 10K
David Halladay was the only Strider to be racing on Sunday (as far as we are aware!) with his participation at the Leeds Christmas 10k Challenge based at next week’s Peco XC venue – Middleton Park. A new route for 2016 took participants from the springy running track of the John Charles Stadium into the woods through the Middleton Park estate, before a final lap of the stadium to bring runners over the line. David completed this challenging event in a time of 49:43.

The Xmas Party – A Stride-Tastic Night
Just over 40 Striders got all dressed up for the 2016 Christmas party on Saturday evening which was held at the Old Swan hotel in Harrogate. The theme for the night, ‘The Great Gatsby’ brought out some fantastic costumes – from hats, to flapper dresses, to bow ties. After digesting dinner, the award for best Striders dancer was up for grabs! Big shout outs to Emma Greveson, Edna Wood, Clare Rogers, Tom Burrell and Gemma Harding….but the winner has to be Martin Brock after deciding to take on a knee slide during a group rendition of Bon Jovi’s “Livin on Prayer”. A BIG thanks to Edna Wood for organising everything – it was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

Is the London Marathon on your to do list?
The club has secured one guaranteed entry for the 2017 Virgin London Marathon and it is now up for grabs via a lucky dip draw. If you wish to enter, you must –
1) A fully paid up member of Knaresborough Striders for the 2016/2017 membership year
2) A fully paid up member of England Athletics (and therefore in a possession of a EA registration number)
3) Have not received a place in the London Marathon via a Knaresborough Striders club draw in any previous years.
If you want to add your name into the hat, please email your name and England Athletics number to info@knaresborough-striders.org.uk by 6pm on Monday 19th December. The draw will be made at the club night on Tuesday 20th December.

Mince Pies and Mulled Wine
As is now tradition, the club will be providing mince pies and mulled wine at one of the local pubs in town after the last Tuesday club run prior to Christmas – Tuesday 20th December. All runs will end at the venue so you may want to park your car at the Chapel Street car park in town rather than having to run back up to the clubhouse.
The last official club run of 2016 will be Thursday 22nd December, with a return on Tuesday 3rd January, however a number of club members will still be meeting on Tuesday 27th and Thursday 29th December should you wish to have a run out to show off all of your new running gear that Santa has left under the tree!

5th Anniversary Celebrations and Awards Night
The club will celebrate its 5th Anniversary and hand out the annual awards on Tuesday 24th January. There will be a club run as normal before we all gather at the clubhouse for some food (20:30 onwards) and handout awards.
This night will also act as the AGM, which will include committee nominations. News of the committee opportunities open will be published in the new year.
