A gigantic Striders Christmas and New Year round-up!

How’s everyone feeling then? New trainers had their first trip out? Set yourself some new running goals? Finished off the last mince pie found at the back of the cupboard? Well here’s another thing to indulge in…a gigantic Striders Christmas and New Year round-up! We start way back on the 17th December…..

17th December – that seems like an age ago!
At Harrogate parkrun, Ian Mitchell was the first Strider to take a finish token, completing the course in 21:12. He was joined by Julian Carr (23:17), Mark Taylor (24:27), Nick Wallen (25:49) and Rob Charlesworth (28:36).

Over at Fountains Abbey, Sean Brennan and Dawn Richardson represented the club, finishing in 20:52 and 29:13 respectively.

Taking on a rather wet and slippy Wetherby parkrun was Guy Close. He took the 2nd position token with a time of 18:58.

Peco Cross Country – Race 2 – An Undulating Course
On Sunday 18th December, a team of 18 Striders headed over to the South Leeds Stadium to take on Race 2 of the 16/17 PECO XC series. The event took participants through a tough route through Middleton Woods, including some testing hills, for just under 5 miles.

Starting with the ladies Nicola Carter secured 1st place in her age category with a time of 34:59. Returning from injury, Sima Lowery clocked 38:12 and was followed by Sue Morley who took 2nd place in her age category in 42:33. Julie Elmes was next around the finishing bend , stopping the clock on 46:10 and she was joined by Kerensa Welsby (47:59), Edna Wood (48:44), Dawn Richardson (51:21), Katie Gray (54:29) and Alison Jackson (54:29).

Martin Brock led home the male contingent in a time of 31:08. James Cornforth returned from University for the holidays to take part and came over the line in 32:09. After the race, the 15/16 awards were handed out. Nicola Carter and Sue Morley picked up age category awards and Sima Lowery went up to collect the ladies team prize (promotion was achieved!). Well done ladies – hopefully we will have a repeat of this success for the 16/17 season!

Striders on Tour
Whilst taking in some winter sun in Playa Blanca (Lanzarote), Graham Yare took on a 5k race named simply “Be Brave and Run 5k”! He finished in “around 22minutes”. Good to see the Striders represented Europe wide!

Santa is (or should that be was?) coming to town
Father Christmas certainly had the wind in his favour on Christmas Eve, with parkrunners met with the back end of a nasty storm giving the worst conditions encountered at parkruns across the North in many a year! At Harrogate, 13 Striders took on the dreadful conditions on the Stray, with James Cornforth heading the contingent in a time of 20:41. He was joined by Ian Mitchell (21:33), Nicola Carter (21:54 – 1st Lady), Sean Brennan (22:52), Jason Green (23:17), Julie Elmes (27:57), Pamela Singleton (28:22), Tony Everitt (28:01), Anna Cornforth (30:11), Robert Earl (30:36), Dawn Richardson (30:47), Edna Wood 31:31 and Paul Heywood (31:32).

The tarmaced course at York was slightly less damp then Harrogate! Guy Close was the first Strider up the finish straight infront of the grandstands, completing the course in 18:25. James Wright and Dan Wilson were also in attendance, finishing in times of 18:49 and 19:05 respectively.

Bring on the Turkey, Mince Pies, Chocolate….
Christmas Day brought much milder and certainly drier conditions for the parkrun attendees but by completing the 5km early on Xmas Day they made sure they had some calories burnt off for the Xmas treats!

Mark Taylor visited the Corby event to tick off another parkrun for the Striders (how many do you think club members have visited?)! Mark completed the West Glebe Park course in 23:52.

Closer to home, 8 Striders got passouts from their families to attend the Harrogate event. Guy Close clocked 19:29, with James Wright next, completing his 100th parkrun in 20:57. Nicola Carter was 1st Lady for the 2nd day in a row (21:38) and was joined by Andy Robinson (21:49), Rob Earl (23:04), Jason Green (23:27), Pamela Singleton (27:35) and Dawn Richardson (31:11).

Chasing up the Chevin
Remember the weather conditions on Boxing Day 2015? Too say it was wet was an understatement with the Chevin Chase nearly been cancelled. The 2016 event was not in danger however and the tough, undulating course, was taken on by Jason Green and Julie Elmes. They finished in times of 58:47 and 0:13:24 respectively.

A Jolly good time
The Jolly Holly Jog, held on the 27th December, was a victim of the weather in 2015 so it was good to see so many Striders in attendance at the 2016 event on a mild Bank Holiday.

Completing the 29th running of the event were James Cornforth (41:42), James Wright (42:19), Ian Waller (44:11), in his second event in two days Jason Green (48:29), Stewart Hymas (50:38), Anna Cornforth (51:56), Kerensa Welsby (01:01:19), Mark Shelton (01:03:02), Dawn Richardson (01:03:18), Roy Cooley (01:07:14), June Graham (01:10:22), Katie Gray (01:10:22) and Anne Cooley (01:10:50).

Lacing up for the last time in 2016
The last day of 2016 was utilised by 12 Striders to bag another parkrun! Sean Brennan took a break from Run Director duties at Harrogate (thanks Sean from all Striders for directing on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day) to make his first visit to York. The flat course was completed by Sean in 21:17.

The Stray was greeted by 6 Striders for a muddy Harrogate event. Keith Emery was handed the 2nd place finishers token after achieving a lung busting 18:27. Gareth Conkleton (22:01) and Mark Taylor (24:14) were the next Striders to cross the finishing line and they were followed by 1st time parkrunner (welcome to the club!) Claire Killingworth (25:41), Julie Elmes 27:23 and Tony Everitt (27:47).

Fountains Abbey, widely regarded as the best parkrun in the UK, was attended by 5 Striders. Guy Close was the first Strider back (18:36) once again, pushing away from Dan Wilson (19:08) and James Wright (19:10) in the last km. Nicola Carter took the 1st lady placing in 21:13 and Dawn Richardson clocked 30:48.

Starting the year with a double
New Years Day is the only day of the year that parkrunners are allowed to record ‘A Double’ and this option was taken up by 4 Striders (that we are aware of – let us know if you took on a double somewhere else) to get the first runs of 2017 under their belts.
First up at 9am was Pontefract, with James Wright leading the Striders contingent with a time of 20:07. Nicola Carter recorded a course PB (21:20), Jason Green finished in 21:49 and Sean Brennan clocked all the 2’s (22:22).

A journey of 6 miles was required to the next parkrun – a 10:30am start at Nostell Priory. The Striders order was the same as ‘Ponty’ – James Wright leading the contingent (20:34), followed by Nicola Carter (22:24), Jason Green (23:16) and Sean Brennan (23:21).

The first parkrun of the year for most
This past Saturday (7th Jan) at Harrogate parkrun, Tom Calvert completed his 51st parkrun in 18:52. Gareth Conkleton (21:59) was next, followed by Ian Mitchell (22:40), Mark Taylor (24:03), Paul Heywood (26:03), David Halladay (29:44), Edna Wood (30:46), Anne Cooley (31:57), Katie Byrne (34:41), Samantha Young (35:38) and Emma Hall (41:30).

Over at Fountains Abbey, Guy Close took the 1st place position token for the first time, leaving something in the bank for the last hill (or is it an undulation?) sprint to complete the course in 18:06. Julian Carr was also in attendance, finishing his first parkrun of 2017 in a time of 23:09.

The course at Wetherby was a bit slippy, but James Wright and Nicola Carter chucked on their trail shoes to get round in 19:27 and 21:41. Nicola took the 1st lady placing….it’s becoming a bit of a habit that Nicola (keep it up!).

Nostell Priory was visited by Jason Green for the 2nd time in a row and he stopped the clock on 22:39. Mark Shelton joined him and recorded a time of 29:49 to get his 2017 parkrunning off to a good start.

Cross Country Champs
On Saturday afternoon, Lightwater Valley Theme Park hosted the 2017 Yorkshire Cross Country Championships once again, providing a tough, undulating course for the Striders in attendance. In the Ladies race, Julie Elmes was the sole Strider, finishing the 5 mile course in 48:43. In the gents race, over a distance of 6.4 miles, Ian Waller achieved a time of 46:59, followed shortly after by Sean Brennan in 48:20.

TNT
The Temple Newsam Ten was held on Sunday, with David Halladay and Dawn Richardson attending to take on the mixed terrain course. They finished in 01:24:54 and 01:51:25 respectivly to get their 2017 race seasons off to great starts.
