Our latest round up contains news of some parkrun tourism, some very muddy boots at a local 10k and the cross country, marathons at the Abbey, hill reps at Harewood and trail running at Lightwater.
The luck of the Irish
On the 11th February, three Striders headed over to Ormeau parkrun, based in South Belfast. Tom Calvert clocked 18:21, followed by Niamh Falconer in 23:20 and Derek Calvert completed the trios results with a time of 23:16 (and apparently had to get the drinks in!).
James Wright and Jason Green also took on some parkrun tourism by visiting the Moors Valley event in the New Forest (Hampshire) as part of the Marathon Talk Training Camp weekend (which was based at the wonderfully named ‘Sandy Balls Holiday Village’!). James recorded a time of 19:14, with Jason obtaining an overall parkrun PB in 20:52.
Closer to home, we reached double figures at Harrogate. Nicola Carter (21:21) was the first of the 10 Striders across the line. She was joined by the ever improving Luke Ratcliffe (22:37), Ian Mitchell (23:47), Paul Heywood (26:08), Eric Morley (27:46), Rob Charlesworth (28:28), Mark Taylor (30:11), Dawn Richardson (32:00), a PBing Danielle Greenwood (38:43) and Lauren Downs 44:05.
A trio of Striders headed to the flat and fast course at York. Guy Close (18:21) held off James Ireland (18:51) and Julian Carr (23:12).
Fiona Slight was the sole Strider at Fountains Abbey. She secured an overall parkrun PB with a time of 32:30 – top stuff Fiona!
Some very muddy boots
The annual Muddy Boots 10k was held on Sunday 12th February at Ripon, giving participants a very muddy outing. David Halladay (51:14) was the first of 7 Striders to taking part to cross the line. He was followed by Sue Morley (58:30), Kerensa Welsby (59:29), Dawn Richardson (01:08:40), June Graham (01:14:41), Katie Gray (01:14:42) and Emma Greveson (01:17:21).

Practice makes perfect
Harrogate parkrun provided good practice for some up and coming cross country events when nine striders attended on the 18th February. James Wright was the first Strider down the finish funnel in 20:14, with Rob Earl making his comeback from injury with a time of 20:57. Gareth Conkleton was next (23:06) and was joined on the Stray by Ian Mitchell (24:23), Rob Charlesworth (27:03), Mark Shelton (28:07), David Halladay (29:09), Mark Taylor (29:59) and Tom Burrell (32:44).
At Fountains Abbey, Tom Calvert headed the seven Striders in attendance with a time of 18:37. Chasing him down on the revised course were Luke Ratcliffe (22:12), Paul Heywood (23:44), Derek Calvert (24:58), Emma Greveson (31:44), a PBing Gaynor Downs (35:19) and Lauren Downs (42:11).
Guy Close was the sole representative at Wetherby, crossing the line in 18:45. Sean Brennan ventured up the A1 to Northallerton and clocked a time of 22:43.
Mudfest at Peco
The 4th race of the 16/17 Peco Cross Country was held at Barnbow Fields in Leeds on Sunday 19th February. In the Ladies event, Nicola Carter continued her domination in the cross country events, finishing the course in 39:49 to take the 1st place position in her age category. Sima Lowery was next in 42:07 and she was joined by Sue Morley (53:06), Edna Wood (57:46), June Graham (57:57) and Alison Jackson (01:06:13).
Six male Striders turned up, with Keith Emery leading the way in a time of 34:26 which was just over a minute ahead of Martin Brock (35:19). They were followed by David Halladay (46:51), Julian Carr (47:41), Eric Morley (53:12) and Anthony Everitt (55:10).
Last parkrun of the February….where are the months going?!
The last Saturday of February saw Striders represented at five different parkrun events.
On the coast at Whitley Bay, Sima Lowery clocked a time of 23:19. Nicola Carter was also up ‘in the North’ where she visited the Gateshead event and a achieved a time of 22:31. Sean Brennan headed East to visit Dalby Forest, stopping the watch on 24:06.
Closer to home, Tom Calvert (18:33) was the first Strider over the line at Fountains Abbey and was joined by Niamh Falconer (23:01 –PB), Derek Calvert (23:28) and Dawn Richardson (30:23).
At Harrogate, Guy Close was the first of six Striders down the finish funnel in 19:22. Rob Earl (20:52) was next followed by Gareth Conkleton (22:47 – his 50th parkrun), Andrew Roberts (25:03), Paul Heywood (27:18) and Fiona Slight (34:27).
Big mileage at the Abbey
The Bolton Abbey Running Festival was held over Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th February, with Striders represented in the Ultra, Marathon and 10k events.
On Saturday, Graham Yare took on the 50km Ultra and finished the undulating, mixed terrain course in 06:10:29.
Moving onto Sunday, the Marathon was taken on by Graham Yare (yes that’s right….the man who completed a 50k ultra the day before….madness) and new member Lisa Harrison. Graham stopped the clock on 04:49:29 with Lisa not far behind in 05:02:04.
The 10k event was taken on by June Graham and Katie Gray, who achieved finish times of 01:17:02 and 01:20:07 respectively.
Keeping the heart beating at Harewood
The British Heart Foundation held its annual Half Marathon at Harewood House on Sunday 26th, which was joined by a new 10k event.
Georgina Townsend completed the Half Marathon in 02:01:27, with Simon Rider (48:17), Paul Heywood (59:04), Edna Wood (59:10) and Dawn Richardson (01:00:33) taking on the 10k.
Fun of the Fell at Ilkley
Also on Sunday, six Striders made the short trip across to Ilkley for the annual fell race hosted by local club Ilkley Harriers. James Warburton, fresh from his travels in Canada, clocked a time of 45:45 and was joined by Sean Brennan (59:29), Nicola Carter (01:01:45), Sue Morley (01:16:55), Sam Keen (01:22:33) and Jason Green (01:40:25).
In Pocklington, not far outside of York, Clare Mckenzie continued her London Marathon build up with participation in the ‘Snake Lane 10′. Clare completed the 10 mile event in 01:37:54.
Into March we go….
The latest ‘first Saturday of the month’ parkrun visit was held this past Saturday with a visit to Temple Newsam. This is an undulating course and due to recent weather there were some interesting puddles to get through! James Wright missed out on the 1st place token by 1 second, finishing in 19:44 for a course PB. Nicola Carter was the next Strider across the line in 24:08, followed by Mark Taylor (24:26), Georgina Townsend (25:57) and Edna Wood (29:14). Jen Carne, an Ilkey Harrier, also attend the trip with the Striders and secured a time of 30:51.
Guy Close secured a PB at York parkrun, falling just short of the illusive sub 18 minute mark with a 18:05. Paul Heywood also came away from York with a PB, finishing the racecourse based event in 23:20.
On the altered Fountains Abbey route, Derek Calvert clocked 23:34 and was joined by Gaynor Downs (33:32 – parkrun PB) , Danielle Greenwood (39:54) and Lauren Downs (40:08 – parkrun PB).
The course at Harrogate parkrun was something of a ‘mudfest’! Taking on the energy sapping route were Rob Earl (20:40), Sean Brennan (22:01), Gareth Conkleton (22:55) and Ian Mitchell (24:31).
Light feet at Lightwater
Moving onto Sunday, eight Striders attend the Lightwater Valley 10k. On an altered (and tougher) course from previous years, James Wright and Dan Wilson had a good tussle for the majority of the race, finishing in 40:45 and 41:15 respectively. Luke Ratcliffe was the next Strider back, finishing in 47:52. He was chased down by David Halladay (49:32), Sam Keen (52:01), Mark Shelton (58:08), Dawn Richardson (01:02:45) and Emma Greveson (01:11:15).

Last PECO of the Season
Also on Sunday, the last of the 5 main PECO Cross Country events was held at Rounday Park. Thirteen Striders attended and were led home by Keith Emery (30:25). Also taking on the event were James Warburton (30:59), Nicola Carter (35:13), Sima Lowery (35:55), Paul Heywood (43:10), Claire Killingworth (44:50), Sue Morley (45:13), Eric Morley (47:15), Kez Welsby (47:58), Edna Wood (49:26), June Graham (50:28), Charlotte Hines (51:37) and Anne Cooley (59:07). A HUGE well done to Nicola Carter who finished at the top of the pile in her age category and will now represent the PECO league in the relay event versus West Yorkshire League this coming Sunday in Halifax.
PB at East Mids
Finishing off our Sunday results, one of our new members, Kate James, took on the East Midlands 10k. She recorded a PB time over the distance, finishing in 55:32. Good to have you on board as a Strider Kate!
