Snow, Sun and lots of fun – its the weekend round up!

parkrun – a cold start to the weekend

Snow showers greeted parkrunners on Saturday morning, with 13 Striders heading out into the cold to start the weekend off with a 5km run.

At Harrogate, which is the venue for our first club championship event this coming Saturday (20/02/16), Sean Brennan was first Strider home with a time of 23:00. He was joined by Julian Carr (25:50), Nick Wallen (26:04), Rob Charlesworth (29:09) and Emma Greveson (35:49).

Guy Close headed over to York and recorded an overall parkrun PB in a time of 19:06.

Fountains Abbey parkrun celebrated its 100th event, attracting a bumper attendance of 347. New member Tom Calvert recorded a course PB with a time of 18:22. He was followed exactly a minute later by Andy Robinson (19:22). Derek Calvert made his Fountains Abbey debut and completed the 2 lap course in 22:33. Liam Kennedy set a new parkrun PB in 23:30 and was joined by Andrea Price, who also recorded a PB (27:37), Dawn Richardson (28:54) and Bill Kirkpatrick (31:45).

Warmer weather for Peco XC

On Sunday morning, Striders finished off the 15/16 Peco Cross Country series with 15 members taking on the 4.7 mile course around Roundhay Park. With the sun shining and making conditions a little warmer than expected, the 600 runners were underway at 11am, with the first mile including a slippery trip up the notorious ‘Hill 60’.

Andy Robinson and James Wright were the first two Striders across the finish line, with Andy pushing ahead with 1.5 miles to go to finish in a time of 35:25, with James following 18 seconds later (35:43). Making a swift appearance on a break from university studies, James Cornforth was third Strider home, completing the course in 36:18. Sean Brennan (37:56), Nicola Carter (38:05 – 2nd in age category), Sima Lowery (38:47) were closely bunched up and were followed by Andy Roberts (42:11), Ian Mitchell (42:22) and, fresh from his 17 mile marathon training run on Saturday, Julian Carr (43:29). Sue Morley finished 2nd in her age category with a time of 47:02 to hold off the ever improving duo of Andrea Price (51:03) and Dawn Richardson (53:35). Edna Wood and Tracy Allison had a battle all the way round and were split by only 2 seconds at the end – finishing in 55:44 and 55:46 respectively. Making her third appearance of the season, Janet Morris finished strongly, stopping the clock on 57:33.
With Sundays race concluding the Peco series for another Winter, the final league standings have been announced. The ladies team took 1st place overall in the Vets 1st division (which sees them promoted the Vets Premier League for the 16/17 series) and 5th overall in the main 2nd division. It is hoped that two female Striders have taken top 3 places in their age categories – watch this space for further news! The men finished 4th in the 2nd division and 7th in the Vets 1st Division.

Trophy Cabinet

I have recently undertaken a search to purchase a trophy cabinet to go in the Cricket club as we are now accumulating a number of club trophies! After looking at the likes of Argos, Amazon, e-bay and specialist firms near and far, it has proved difficult due to the “enormously pricey” and “limited size and colour” etc.

Are there any members who know retailers, friends, or any other person or organisation locally where we might be able to purchase a cabinet from? I am at club each Tuesday night and on 01423 866983 for contacting regarding the above.

Thanks Eric

Keswick Mountain Festival Update

The club trip to the Keswick Mountain Festival (Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd May) is approaching fast and with ticket prices now available, it’s time to start booking!

The entry prices and cost of camping are summarised here.

Whilst this is advertised as a three day trip, please feel free to come and join us for however long you want. Maybe you just want to come up on the Saturday for the 10km event or do you want to make it a full week away by spending some time up in the Lake District prior to meeting up with fellow Striders over the weekend? There are a number of options for staying in the area – Camping, Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, Woodland Lodges, Caravans, etc. Where you choose to stay is up to you as the club will not be booking any accommodation for members to utilise. Meet up times will be advertised, especially for the sporting events and concerts, but come and go as you please!

As of 07/02/16, 9 Striders have signed up to an event and these entries are summarised here.. This will be updated every Friday evening (please let us know via info@knaresborough-striders.org.uk if you have entered but have not been added to the document).

We will shortly have a designated area on the website for the 2016 trips – watch out for updates.

We will be operating a car share scheme to this event – please meet at KCC for 07:55am (08:00am departure).

Hot food will be provided (£2) and the bar will be open.

Sunday 14th February – Peco Cross Country @ Roundhay Park
The 5th and final race of the 15/16 Peco Cross Country season will be held at Roundhay Park. It should be an exciting close to the season, with Striders ladies on the verge of taking top spot honours in 3 separate categories and the Mens team looking to beat Harrogate Harriers in the 2nd Division. If you haven’t competed on one of these events before, why not come and have a go?! See Eric Morley for further information.

The Stray plays host to the first Club Championship event of 2016 – Harrogate parkrun. Just turn up with your parkrun barcode and we will take a note of the all the Striders in attendance. PECO CROSS COUNTRY – 14/02/2016 – Roundhay Park, Leeds

Wanted! More Men and Ladies for the final race in the Peco Cross Country league. Come and give it a try with perhaps a view to full participation in the 2016/17 season. It is great fun, muddy at times, friendly, courses no more than 5 miles, food after the event and a really wide standard of runners taking part.

To run in the final event (14/02/16) and be “a counter for the team”, please contact me before 04/02/16. If you contact me after this you can run as a Guest. I will be at club 02/02/16 and available on phone 01423 866983 for contact.

Lets have a massive turn out from all those with numbers already and have a great day.

More information for Race 5 and the Peco Relays (on 28/2) will be available as soon as I have it.

Go Striders.
