Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association – WE ARE NOW AFFILIATED!

At the last Club Committee meeting it was decided to join this Association. The YVAA Committee organise a Grand Prix series of up to 10 races in Yorkshire (many within easy driving distance).

This year there are nine races scheduled. Most are mixed terrain and up to 10 klms. These races are only £5 per person to enter and there is food and  plenty of prizes after each race. These races will open a host of new   venues for Striders .  You can Register your details on  the  website for these events at www.yvaa.org . Go to, Grand Prix and at the bottom of the page is an entry form. This simply saves a lot of hassle trying to register at your 1st race. Do enter at least 48 hours before your 1st event. Its a dead simple form.  The events are open to Men and Ladies, to score as an Individual and for your Club you have to be 35 years old on the date of the 1st event. Men and Ladies who are 33 and 34 can run but will not score.

Secondly a  Championship is held for each Classic running distance – 5k, 5miles, 10k, 10miles, 1/2 Marathon and 15miles. Open races are selected to incorporate the Yorkshire Vets Championships. You simply enter the designated  races and as a member of YVAA your result will be identified to the Committee  by each Event organiser. The events selected for 2017 can be viewed on the website (go to ‘Championship Races’).

Further, there is a Fell Championship race, a Vets Cross country, Vet Relays and a Track and Field event is held (usually at Spenborough Stadium).

Do read the website for the fullest of details and I am always available to give further information or clarifications to Members. You do need an England AthleticsIndividual Number to compete.

These are really enjoyable events.

Go Striders – at least once to try it out!

Thanks Eric

Club Trips 2017

The club will be arranging two trips again this year – one in the UK and one in Europe.

24 Hours of running
The UK based trip will be to a new event at Bramham Park (nice and local) on 1st/2nd July – ENDURE24.

After the huge success of 20 Striders taking on the Equinox24 last September we thought we would give a similar event a go and, with it been local, we are hoping to get a greater number of Striders in attendance.

So what does the event entail? Basics are that its on for 24hrs (12Noon Saturday to 12Noon Sunday) and is run over an 8km course. Teams of between 3 and 8 can be entered (or perhaps you want to go solo?) with the aim that one member of each team is on the course at all times. You can do 1 lap, 2 laps, up to 8 laps if you want – it’s an event that caters for abilities.

The cost (if booked by 4th February) is £45 which includes camping and shower facilities at the venue (also covers cost of family members that may want to camp) plus an event t-shirt and medal. Obviously with it being so closeyou may want to come and do a lap, go home to get a shower and then come back for your next lap (we will be putting a base timetable together).

If you are interested, please let James Wright know by 29th January via speaking to him at a club night, via facebook message or email to info@knaresborough-striders.org.uk. Once intial numbers are known, teams will be set up and notifications sent to allow people to enter on the event website before the price increase on 4th February.

A social in Poland…with a parkrun thrown in
The Euorpe trip (date TBA) will be to Gdansk in Poland. This will be more of a social trip with a parkrun thrown in on the Saturday morning and some guided runs around the city on the Friday.

Return flights from Leeds/Bradford Airport with Ryanair will cost around £55-£75 and on current research, hotels in the area are very reasonably priced also. The trip is likely to be held in May or September, with a date to be set in the next week or so – watch out for more details on this website and social media.

PECO Cross Country – Sunday 22/01/17 – “IMPORTANT MESSAGE”

Further information regarding Sundays run as been received from Mark Hetherington (Peco Co-ordinator) –

1.Registration is at the Dalesman Pub on Butcher Hill which is  5 minutes walk from the Start-Finish area. The Pub postcode is LSI6 5EA.

2.There is only on street parking for this run.

3. We are asked  NOT to warm up/run across any of the  football pitches. Apparently at the last    Peco event that took place there was much damage caused by runners – to the detriment of football fixtures. A repeat of this would see the loss of this facility. The football clubs will be  “watching us”  at this event.

Important detailed information about the Course is given on the PECO XC website (www.pecoxc.co.uk) and specifically mentions being considerate to locals walking with dogs, etc.

Thanks Eric

Zero to Hero 2017 – FAQ’s

Our 2017 Zero to Hero programme starts this Thursday and we are expecting a large turnout!

Last year’s course was hugely successful and our qualified Run Leaders are once more ready to inspire and support newcomers to train them to go from zero to being able to take on a 3 mile run. The course lasts for 8 weeks and will guide people new to running through a step by step programme to build up their fitness and confidence to run for 3 miles or do a 5km parkrun.

We have had a number of questions regarding the course, which are answered below –
Q: I am unable to make the first night (12th January) so can I register on anouther night?
A: Yes absolutly, however please try to register on Tuesday 17th at the latest if possible.

Q: What time should I arrive and what time will I be finished each session?
A: Registration will open at 19:00 at Knaresborough Cricket Club, Aspin Lane. The group will head out from 19:30 and be back at the club for no later than 20:30. From Tuesday 17th January, please arrive at the club at 19:20 for a 19:30 start (if you are registering on the 17th, please come down any time from 19:00).

Q: What is the cost of the course?
A: £15 for 8 weeks (this includes Striders membership until 31st March 2017).

Q: What ages is the course for?
