Zero to Hero 2016

Knaresborough Striders are planning a new Zero to Hero programme commencing Thursday January 7th 2016. Last years course was hugely successful and this year our qualified Run Leaders are once more ready to inspire and support you to train you to go from zero to being able to take on a 3 mile run.

The course lasts for 8 weeks and will guide people new to running through a step by step programme to build up their fitness and confidence to run for 3 miles or do a 5K parkrun.

Registration opens at 7pm on 7th January at Knaresborough Cricket Club, Aspin Lane. The cost of the 8 week programme is £15, payable when you register, and the training nights are Tuesday and Thursday. If you can’t make every night there is a simple programme you can follow in your own time. Come along, improve your fitness and meet new friends!

Runs, Wine and Mince Pies – Tuesday 15/12/15

With the countdown to Xmas well and truly in swing, the club would like to invite all members to join them for a glass of Mulled Wine and a Mince Pie after Tuesday nights runs.

Run Leaders will be taking out groups for joggers and runners, with Eric also putting on a Structured Run session (on road) for those who would like to try out some interval work. Each of the groups will be finishing the sessions at the location of the Xmas treats!

We look forward to seeing as many Striders down as possible – meet at KCC as usual for a 19:30 start.

Peco Cross Country – Race 2 – West Park Fields – 13/12

Another fantastic turn out for the 2nd Peco Cross Country event of the season.

On a very muddy course, with some gentle undulations, and a cold start to the morning, 10 men and 5 ladies turned out and performed really well. Thanks to John Williams for encouraging us along. Results will be published when available.

Dates for the Diary

A few reminders to take note of –

London Marathon – We have been allocated one place for a club member to take part in the 2016 London Marathon. If you are interested, please advise us (via, facebook or advising a committee member) by 9pm on Thursday 10th December. Please only put yourself forward for the draw if you can give the required training 100% commitment in the build upto the event. Also please note, this is not a free entry and therefore the normal entry fee applies and you must be a member of English Athletics. The draw will take place after training on Tuesday 15th December.

Mulled wine and Mince Pies – As a reward for the fantastic efforts of all members in 2015, the club will be supplying Mulled Wine and Mince pies after training on Tuesday 15th December. After completing the normal training runs, the run leaders will guide each group to a secret location in Knaresborough for the xmas treats!

Santa is coming to town – On Sunday 20th December, join us for a ‘Santa Run’ around the town. Starting at 12Noon in the Market place, we will be heading out on a 1.5mile walk/jog/run around the town dressed up as the main man himself! Entry is £5, which includes your santa outfit – all profits will be given to Cancer Research UK. Please feel free to bring family and friends along. Refreshments will be served in the Royal Oak afterwards.

Zero to Hero – Do you have a relative, friend or colleague who is interested in building up to running 5km? After a hugely successful ‘Zero to Hero’ course was held early in 2015, the club will be hosting a new course starting on Thursday 7th January. Spread the word!

Anniversary Party – On Tuesday 26th January, we willl be celebrating anouther fantastic year of Striders. Join us for post training food, yearly awards and a celebration of the clubs continued success.

AGM – A short, sharp AGM to set us up for 2016 will be held after training on Tuesday 9th February. Let us know if you have any ideas of how we can improve or if you are interested in helping out behind the scenes.

Peco XC – Race 2 – West Park Fields (Leeds) – Sunday 13/12/15

There will be toilet facilities available at the Dalesman pub and food will also be served there post race.

If you have a race number and not used it, “come on” its a great morning out with runners of every standard and a great one lap route.

The club is organising a car share scheme for this event. Meet at KCC for a 09:20am departure.

Club Trips 2016

After the success of the first Striders group trip away (2015 Amsterdam Half Marathon), we are putting together two trips for 2016 – the Keswick Mountain Festival and the Equinox 24. Both of these events offer different kinds of challenges to the ‘everyday road race’ and allow you to bring the whole family along if you wish!

A summary of each event, is below.

Keswick Mountain Festival – Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd May 2016

This event is based within Crow Park (Keswick), on the shores of Derwentwater. It offers a number of sporting events from a 5km run to a relay Triathlon. The event is more than just about sport however as there will be two live concerts – one on the night of Friday 20th and one on Saturday 21st. There are also many activities for children to take part in allowing you to bring family up to enjoy the event with you.
In terms of accommodation, camping is available, or you may wish to book a room at one of the many hotels/B&B’s in the area. How long you come up to the festival for and which events you wish to participate in (see website for full details of the sporting events available) is up to you.

The main running events, which are now on sale, are as follows,
• Saturday 21st May – 5km (£15.00) and 25km (£30.00)
• Sunday 22nd May – 10km (£27.50) and 50km (£38.00)
o Note that the 10km has multiple start times – the 11:00 and 12:00 races are designated for Striders

For the festival tickets, there are number of options (some include camping) but these are yet to go on sale. An announcement will be made as soon as they are available.

If you are interested in attending, please complete your details on the sign up sheet (available on the club notice board from 1st December) so we can keep you informed of further developments in relation to the festival tickets. Please note that the Striders will not be booking any of the events or accommodation on behalf of its members, therefore we would advise booking your preferred event asap if you wish to attend. Accommodation is also starting to fill in the area, so if you don’t want to camp, booking this asap would also be advised.

Equinox 24 – 17th & 18th September 2016 (arrival on 16th September)

The Equinox24 is a 24 hour mixed terrain race around a 10k loop against the clock. The event is open to all abilities: whether entering to run solo or in a team of 2-8 – this race will be exhilarating, testing and rewarding with a great atmosphere. The 10k route will take you around the picturesque Belvoir Castle Estate.

There is free camping from Friday (16th) for competitors and spectators. Equinox24 is renowned for its welcoming, supportive and friendly atmosphere and is a great experience for runners and supporters alike. You’ll find the Equinox24 physically challenging and mentally tough but an amazing experience not to be missed. Check out the videos and pictures from last year on the event website to give you a flavour of what to expect.
The Striders will be looking to enter a number of teams into the event, with team sizes of between 5 and 8 anticipated. All abilities can get involved – it would be great to mix up the groups and make it a real ‘Striders family’ event.

The cost, up to the 31st December, is £45 (rises to £50 beyond this date). This includes camping (one tent pitch) for each person also. If you are interested in this event, please fill in your details below so we can start to assemble teams and then enter all in one go. A first cut (to start forming teams) will be taken on Thursday 17th December.

If you don’t fancy taking part in the 24hr event, there is a separate 10km race on the Saturday (starting at the same time as the main 24hr event). This is £15.00 to enter.

A kids fun run is also offered on the Saturday, so why not make it a family trip away?!

We would also love Striders to join us who would just like to offer support through the weekend –you are more than welcome to come along (small fee for camping).

Yorkshire Cross Country Champs

Does anybody else want to do the Yorkshires, XC at Lightwater Valley on Saturday Jan 9th 2016? Please see me at Club Tues Dec 1st ,or phone me if not down 866983. Only £6. Latest notification to me 04/12/15.

The Northern Cross Country Championships take place at Whitton Park, Blackburn, on January 30th 2016. Anyone interested please let me know.

Curry, parkruns and Cross Country – Weekend Roundup

From the heat of Fridays Curry Night, to the chill of the wind at Cross Country on Sunday, it was another action packed weekend for Knaresborough Striders.

Starting the weekend off in style, 32 Striders attended the club Curry night at the Dil Raj on Friday night. It was great to see so many out supporting a club social night, especially a number of recently joined members. Big thanks to Tom Burrell for making all of the arrangements.

Moving into Saturday, 6 Striders represented the club at parkrun events. At Harrogate, Nicola Carter was first Strider back, taking 2nd lady overall in a time of 22:11. Joining her on the windswept Stray was Anthony Everitt (28:20), Rob Charlesworth (28:48), Tracy Allison (29:30) and Emma Greveson (44:26). At the Fountains Abbey event, Phil Chatterton completed the course in 33:39.

On Sunday, the first Peco Cross Country race of the 15/16 season took place at Temple Newsam. It was a record breaking attendance for any Peco XC event, with just over 800 participants (21 Striders) taking on the hilly and muddy 4.6 mile course. This event also marked the first time Striders were competing for XC league points, after competing as a ‘guest’ club over the last 2 years.

Starting with the Ladies, Nicola Carter was the first blue and yellow vest across the finish line, recording a time of 35:11. Sima Lowery was next in 36:04, followed by Sue Morley (41:06), Andrea Price (46:46), Tracey Allison (48:03), Edna Wood (48:45), Dawn Richardson (50:09), Katie Gray (51:26), Janet Morris (51:45) & June Graham (53:03). Those results have put the ladies in excellent league positions – 4th (of 8) in the 2nd Division and 1st (of 11) in the Vets First Division! What a start for the ladies!

The men were also well represented, with Keith Emery taking first Strider honours (and just missing out on a top 100 spot) with a time of 31:15. Following him up the muddy finishing straight was James Wright in 32:07. They were chased down by Dan Wilson (33:21), Sean Brennan (34:36), Phil Cornforth (34:37), Ian Mitchell (35:59), Andy Robinson (37:51), Julian Carr (39:27), Eric Morley (43:59), Steve Morris (51:40) and John Williams (54:13). The result sees the club just holding off Harrogate Harriers to sit in 3rd (of 8) in the 2nd Division, with a placing of 7th (of 11) in the Vets 1st Division.
